2024 Symposium Program:















GEMELA (Grupo de Estudios sobre la Mujer en España y las Américas, pre-1800) will hold its biennial conference in Puebla, Mexico, in the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP) from July 17-19, 2024.
The conference theme seeks to increase the visibility of women’s cultural, historical and social production in Spain, Portugal and the Americas before 1800. Conference themes include:
· Border crossings in women’s writing
· Restructuring of identity through art and literature
· Self-representation
· Production and circulation of indigenous and Afro-descendant knowledge
· Women’s inventiveness and ingenuity
· Cultural production in convent life, individual and/or community
· Feminine imaginaries and their representation systems
· Incorporations and exclusions of feminine subjects in institutions and/or law
· Women and the Inquisition
· Feminine subjectivities in the early modern Hispanic world
· Feminine mobility, physical and/or social
· Motherhood and women’s daily lives
· Women’s cultural production of medicines and medical knowledge Feminine visual culture
Conference participants will have access to one meal and a tasting that features Pueblan cuisine, a Baroque music concert, a cultural visit, a welcome package and coffee during the event.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
Allyson M. Poska is Professor of History emerita at the University of Mary Washington.
Alma Montero Alarcón is a researcher at the Museo Nacional de Virreinato. She holds a doctorate with honorable mention in Latin American Studies from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
